Cordocentesis

Cordocentesis, also known as percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), stands as an advanced diagnostic procedure within the realm of prenatal care. It involves taking sample of fetal blood directly from the umbilical cord. This intricate procedure provides detailed insights into the health and well-being of the developing fetus and is typically performed under ultrasound guidance.

When is Cordocentesis Recommended?

Cordocentesis is typically recommended in specialized situations where more detailed information about the fetus’s health is required. These situations include:

  • Genetic Disorders: Cordocentesis may be recommended when there is a heightened risk or suspicion of genetic disorders that cannot be adequately assessed through other prenatal diagnostic procedures. Assessing of chromosomal abnormalities, allows for the detection of conditions such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau syndrome and helps in appropriate decision-making.
  • Blood Disorders: If there is a concern about blood disorders, such as hemophilia or sickle cell disease, cordocentesis can provide accurate information about the baby’s blood composition and helps in planning necessary treatment line.
  • Rh Incompatibility: In cases of Rh incompatibility between the mother and the baby, cordocentesis allows for direct assessment of fetal blood type and Rh factor and a better understanding of whether the Rh incompatibility is leading to fetal anemia and thus provide appropriate treatment.
  • Fetal Infection: When there is a suspicion of fetal infection, cordocentesis can be utilized to directly collect sample of fetal blood for diagnostic purposes and guiding appropriate medical interventions.
  • Blood Transfusion Planning: Cordocentesis is employed in situations where early detection of conditions necessitating in-utero blood transfusions is crucial for the well-being of the fetus.
